Intro:
Search Engine Paid (Sponsor Ads) vs the Organic listings.
There are actually two types of listings in the results of a Search Engine query: the Paid link spots and the Organic link spots. Many times a keyword searches will return top sponsor listings at the very top of the page, and also down the right hand side. These are Paid Ads. People pay for those spots via bidding on keywords, pay-per-click, and other similar advertising mediums.
The results listed 1 through... in the area below the Paid Sponsor Ads are the organic listings. These are websites which the Search Engines have found. Search Engines like Google, MSN, and Yahoo have robots - sometimes called Bots or Spider Bots - which canvas the internet indexing (or spidering) websites. In other words, they are databases. Other engines do not have spider bots. People manually submit their website to be included in their database usually.
However it is a website finds it's way into a search engine, once it makes the database it gets rated, ranked, and sorted based on a rather complicated method. Basically, search engines decide if they like a website based on content, and then record if a website is popular - usually through links -, and whether or not it is getting website traffic or visitors. All that is added up and a site position is obtained. The search engines then display the search results starting with the #1 most popular website on down to the last.
This means that people see the most popular websites listed top down. From a business perspective, if you are looking for visibility in the Search Engines, you want a top 40 listing or better. So... how do you do that without paying big bucks?
